BMWMOCM
NEWSLETTER

Volume 24, Issue 11 Dec 2000
Some business to take care of this month. First, if you have not renewed your club
membership for next year, the January newsletter will be your last issue. If you have not yet renewed, we are asking
club members who are online if they would prefer to receive their
newsletter that way, instead of via
snail mail. Please indicate on the
renewal form. (If you have already
renewed and wish to receive the online version only, please e-mail Steffan,
Dale or myself.) Anyone with e-mail who
wishes to get the newsletter the old-fashioned way may certainly do so. I still prefer to get a newspaper delivered
every day.
There is no club meeting in
December, while the club banquet will be the meeting for January. In February, we will hold the general
meeting at a new location, the Motor Oil Coffee Bar, located in the Trackstar
complex in south Minneapolis. Exact
details will be given in the next newsletter.
Thanks to all members who
contributed to the newsletter this year, and for the kind words of
support. Have a safe and happy holiday.
Steffan Fay is our new web master.
Please visit our club web site at www.bmwmocm.com to get the latest info on
club events. Contact Steffan at sfay@odbs.com.
It’s time to renew your 2001 club membership! Please make use of the renewal form in this newsletter.

Quiz: How is the BMWMOCM better than
the entire United States? Answer: It’s November 24 as I write this and WE know
who our next president is! Seriously,
we can look forward to another great riding year, with Molly Gilbert as our new
club president, as well as new club officers and board members. I suggest that the best way to get to know
everyone is to be sure to take part in our annual club awards banquet. The date this year is Saturday, January
20. The place is City View Banquet
Center at the Lost Spur Country Club on Highway 13 in Eagan. The instructions for reservations can be
found elsewhere in this newsletter, or check our web page. We will have the introduction and
installation of the new club officers, mileage awards, and some other exciting
events. By the way, if you know of a club
member that you think deserves a special award for service to the club, or a “very
special” award to recognize his or her activities this past riding season,
please call Karol Patzer, Jerry Dubrall or me ASAP. And reserve your space at the banquet soon!
Finally, our membership renewals have been coming in very steadily, but you should renew soon for 2001 so you don’t miss anything! If you worked two or more shifts at the last Hiawatha Rally, your membership is courtesy of the club, but please send in a copy of the form for our records anyway. Please send me an e-mail or call me if you are not sure your membership is covered. My address is dkmcpeterson@aol.com and my phone is 651-739-4623. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, and I hope to see all of you at our party on January 20th.

Secretary’s
Report
The
November meeting of the BMWMOCM was called to order by President Dale Peterson
at 7:34p.m. at Lake Como Pavilion. There were 43 people present and Austin the
dog, who was asked to leave(because of his affinities towards Harleys?) Guests
were Gary Tome, R90S & R60/5; Rick Kottke, R100T & 600/5; and Sandy
Miller. Treasurer’s report--$137.46 in the operating fund and $4,809.12 in the
rally fund. It is time for membership renewal—send yours in! The swap table had
only some bags and a few bikes for sale. Some members made the BMW Owners News
in a photo—there goes their 15 minutes of fame. The entire field of new officers were elected by slate (should
have been at the meeting to find out what that means) and were elated to know
that Florida will not be holding up the results. The banquet will be Jan. 20th;
money is due by the 12th. Ride reports: Jerry attended the
Metropolitan Hitching Post Ride; Nate was at the Falling Leaf Rally and Larry
went to Spring Green where the Alphabet Ride was put on by Lotus Tours.
Everybody enjoyed their respective rides—which probably indicates that if you
were to go on most rides, you’ll probably have a good time. So go. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05p.m.
After the meeting Bob Nordland, a Robbinsdale police
officer, explained the use of the laser gun. He went over many of the aspects
regarding its use and how it is not the infallible piece of machinery that some
suppose it to be. You should have been
at the meeting to see and hear him. And then Dave Porter shared his long
awaited Harley Convert-O-Matic. What can one say after seeing it? What kind a
mind would conceive of such a thing? We should watch Dave more closely—if
nothing else for our own protection. You should have been at the meeting to see
it.
Fall Round-Up 2000
by Lisa Kinney
Picture yourself viewing 10 to 12 inches of snow in
your front yard in the U.P of Michigan.
You are sipping a home brew of some concoction that keeps you warm,
happy and somewhat drowsy. The
drowsiness is OK, because your motorcycle is safely parked in the garage and
you have nowhere to travel today. You
also have the luxury of lethargy on this day, because you realize that an event
which has been in the planning for 6 months was completed without a hitch the
very weekend before the snow started to
fall. This is NO DREAM. This is my REALITY, living in the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan.
We, in fact, did receive 10 to 12 inches of snow, one
week to the day after the BMWMOCM Fall Round-up 2000 was completed with great
success. Just six days before the snow
fell, we had enjoyed temperatures in the 70's, with bright sunshine and the
peak of the Fall Colors. It just so
happened that we had the foresight to invite 20 of our friends from Minnesota
to join us for a day to ride 350 miles, to Copper Harbor and back, at the tip
of the Keweenaw Peninsula, on the very weekend the “weather gods” decided to
smile on us. It is no secret that our
weather in the UP of Michigan can change every 5 minutes or so. We realized in planning this event, that
only the hearty souls of our club need attend, as the weather could turn nasty
at any moment. Despite our warnings to
bring the warmest “gear” you own, and to be prepared for the worst, we actually
had the most enjoyable weather of the season.
Statistically, we had 20 bikes: 22 attendees, with 4
females, 16 males and 2 co-pilots.
During the event, we took over the entire Travelers Motel, in Bessemer
MI (just east of Ironwood, MI). Some of
the “must see” places we visited were: Porcupine Mountains State Park, Eagle
Harbor MI and the Poorrock Abbey (for Peanut Butter and Jelly bars), Brockway
Mountain Drive and Copper Harbor at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. We had an unbelievably enjoyable lunch in
Copper Harbor at the Harbor Haus, with an incredible view of Lake Superior. Coming home on M-43, we had a breathtaking
view of the fall colors, while traveling through the forest on a twisty road in
the bright sunshine. It just was
spectacular! We are told that the
colors in the UP are ranked #2 in beauty, just behind those seen in Vermont.
I really can tell you nothing additional, but that the
Fall Round-up should be on your calendar for 2001. Please make your plans early (by the deadline announced for the
event), and your effort will be rewarded.
A Message from Bob Cox
As
Past President, I served on the board this year and want to thank all the
officers for a fine job. Also all others who volunteered their time to make the
club even better. We have out grown our
present meeting place and want all club members to keep the eyes open for a new
one. The context of the meetings has been great but we need more room. Tell the
new board members what to look at/for .
We
are planning another bus trip to Aerostich, the Polaris factory, or S&S
Mfg. in Viola, WI . Remember that the last Aerostich trip was sold out. Talk to
anyone who went, we had a great time. The motorcycle show is in January this
year, so the trip will be in February about the time when we’ll all need a dose
of vitamin C.
